Patterns

I designed a set of icons that I then turned into a series of patterns. I was inspired by space, so my icons were the sun, the moon, and Saturn. I simplified them into black and white icons, then combined them in different ways to make 6 patterns that are unique yet fit together in a set. I first made small square patterns that were in black and white, then added color. Although space is traditionally thought of as a very dark space, I chose very bright and vibrant colors to express the excitement and mystery of outer space.

Drafts

I started with quick sketches for each icon that simplified them into basic forms. I wanted the final icons to be very simple and graphic, yet easily recognizable. Once I was done with the sketches, I cut the shapes out of white paper and put them on a black background, although ultimately I decided to invert the colors and have the icons be black to give them more weight. My next step was to draw the icons in Illustrator and combine them together in different ways to make abstract patterns. Once I had the black and white design, I added color and created my final patterns.
